Remember what I said about texture. Texture is one of the best ways to affect the mood of your event and has a huge play on the decor. A key element of texture is flowers. The various visual feels of flowers can emit different moods from lush to edgy to ethereal and woodsy.

Therefore you have to consider your overall mood and design when selecting your desired flowers. Of course it’s also best to keep in mind what flowers are in season for your wedding.

The above flowers are an Iris, Wintersweet, Winter Daphne, and Viburnums.

These can be incorporated in various means throughout the decorations. One of my favorite decoration ideas is to create a bookcase display with overflowing Winter Daphne to accent the vibrant colors of The Private Roof Club & Garden at the Gramercy Park Hotel.

Stay tune for more creative ways of incorporating flowers into the aesthetic design.

Outside of the Box.

December 15, 2010

By Stephanie of Stephanie Reinish Photography.

Sometimes you just have to think a little outside the box!

I’m sure that when everyone is searching for their wedding photographer and once you’ve made that decision of who’s just right, there are a few pictures that you saw that made you say “I want THAT picture!” and I’m sure that’s a lot of what made you  hire us.

However, no two shoots are the same (and it would be oh so boring if they were). That’s one of the difference of what I do (be it a wedding or a portrait) than working in a studio and why I choose location photography. You never know what you’re going to get.I could go to the same location at the exact same time (and date) that I previously and guarantee that we wouldn’t get the same shot.

You have to go into your engagement session and your wedding with a little bit of an open mind. It’s great to tell us certain shots you like and most importantly why you like them, because that will help us to get you the best images.

Now, although you won’t get the shot that you fell in love with when you booked us, you will get images that you are more in love with, because they capture your love! (and most of the time my favorite images are what I most recently shot!)

So, with the thinking outside the box theme, I’m sharing with you a Bat Mitzvah! This wouldn’t be what most people think of for a Bat Mitzvah but I love it!

Engaged in New York City.

December 14, 2010

Written by Stephanie of Stephanie Reinish Photography.

So, you’re engaged?! Congratulations! There is nowhere better to take your engagement photos than in New York City. There are so many backdrops to choose from and locations you would never dream of that are truly amazing.

I always encourage couples to do their engagement session somewhere that means something to them. For instance J & M are getting married out west and went to school in the south but are starting their lives together here, in Manhattan and that’s something to be documented!

It doesn’t matter what your reasoning is just choose somewhere that has a story, and if it doesn’t already have a story go and make one! I just want every couple to be able to look back on these pictures, and remember the amazing moments they experienced while capturing them.

It’s Too Easy Being Green…

December 13, 2010

Written by Jill of Shindig Invitations.

We all love green and these days it’s everywhere. It’s the most prolific color in nature and thanks to that, the word “Green” doesn’t just describe the color of peas anymore, but a way to an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Green is having a moment. Team Green! Green is better than Oprah!!

I’m sick to death of green. And, after reading a New York Magazine poll yesterday which found that only 64% of people view the green M&M favorably, (What? Isn’t this the randy M&M? Why all the haters?), I’m guessing I’m not the only one.

In the six years Shindig has been business almost half of the wedding invitations I’ve designed have featured green as one of the primary colors, (I actually sat and counted last night). Today I thought I’d give the other colors out there some attention. Today…Shindig celebrates some of the less obvious choices in wedding color schemes…

Exotic: Magenta, Plum and Turquoise

Autumnal: Brick, Papaya, Rose and Chocolate

Tropical: Azure & Tangerine

So my first venue suggestion is obvious from that lovely painting we’ve been working with the last couple weeks…

Could you imagine walking down the sidewalk of Bryant Park between rows of oversized light posts to a ceremony staged in front of Le Carrousel?

To hold an event at Bryant Park you actually have to go through a proposal process that includes details about your event. It is recommended that you allow a lead time of 3 to 6 months for large events and 1 to 2 months for smaller affairs. However, a complete proposal can usually be reviewed within a week and estimated fees will be provided by the Events Department.

You can have your wedding planner arrange everything through the Events Department or contact them personally at events@urbanmgt.com or by phone 917-438-5119. An Event Planning Guide is also provided through the Bryant Park website that provides detailed information on preparing an event proposal.

Now you are probably wondering where the light bulbs come in to play, right?

Well, I’d like to introduce you to The Private Roof Club & Garden at Gramercy Park Hotel.

Doesn’t that just seem so ethereal and inviting? As soon as I saw Dan & Carly’s wedding here, I knew it was the perfect place for an intimate NYC affair.

Everything about this space is stunning, from the aura of the early 20th century hotel roof tops to the artwork of Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst. The Private Roof Club & Garden offers a little something for everyone and can accommodate up to 300 guests.

When you arrange to host your reception at the Gramercy Park Hotel you are provided with a team of skilled event professionals who will cater to your every need. To set up a meeting with the Director of Special Events call 212-201-2168 or email ckornreich@gramercyparkhotel.com.

Next week we will discuss additional decoration ideas that will really make these spaces unique to our event.

Make Postcards, Not Waste…

December 7, 2010

By Jill of Shindig Invitations.

When you’re in the paper business it’s not always easy to avoid making waste. All those fancy wedding invitations and reply cards are cut down from larger pieces of paper leaving scraps that are often so small they’re impossible to use for something else, (that doesn’t stop me from hoarding them in hopes that I’ll use them one day for a place card or to prop up an uneven table).

At Shindig we are committed to doing what we can to be friendly to Mother Earth. We use recycled paper and print our letterpress pieces with soy or vegetable based ink. However, we also try to take it one step further by using creativity in our design and encouraging clients to think outside the box with their invitations.

We’d be fooling ourselves if we thought everyone kept the invitations they receive forever, but it’s a guarantee that the envelopes get tossed. The days of using outer AND inner envelopes are over (or at least they should be).

It’s especially easy to eliminate the reply envelope because there is usually very little information to include on the response card. This leaves room to add an address and turn it into a postcard. We think this works especially nice with destination weddings.

But hold onto your bouquets, ladies! We also have been known to eliminate envelopes all together with our custom made all-in-one self mailing invitation.

The back of the invitation is addressed, while the front side has curved petal flaps that open to reveal the invitation and perforated response postcard that guests can detach and send back. It’s all very satisfying, much less wasteful, and most importantly, economical.
