How to Get Married in NYC.

December 8, 2010

Obtaining a marriage license can seem intimidating, so this post is a how-to guide to squash any anxiety you may have…

First, I am sure most of you are wondering about cost. A marriage license in New York costs $35 and can be payed for with credit card or money order, made payable to the city clerk.

Alright, since we’ve covered the cost, lets talk about the steps taken to obtain your marriage license.

You need to first begin the application process. You can start the application online, but you do have to complete your application at the Office of the City Clerk. Or, you can start your entire application in person. Also, note that both parties applying for the license must be present. As you apply for the license you will be asked questions like, where were you born, have you been married before, your address, etc. All very simple questions. While you’re answering these very simple questions you will also need to prove who you are.

Now, acceptable forms of  identification are…

  • Driver License with photograph (from the United States of America or any of its territories)
  • Non-Driver Identification Card with photograph (from the United States of America or any of its territories)
  • Learner Permit with photograph (from the United States of America or any of its territories)
  • Active United States Military Identification Card
  • Passport
  • United States Certificate of Naturalization (good for 10 years after date of issue)
  • United States Alien Registration Card
  • United States Employment Authorization Card

Once you have completed your application and you have sworn that everything on it is truthful, your license will be processed while you wait. However, you must wait 24 hours before a ceremony can be performed. Your license is then valid for 60 days.

See, now isn’t that easy?
