A Novel Idea.

As soon as I saw the book cover designs of Coralie Bickford-Smith I knew these would look stunning incorporated into a wedding scheme. Look at the rich details and colors of these designs.

Incorporating a bride and groom’s love of literacy is becoming a growing trend in today’s weddings. Not only do you have the option of pairing a stack of beautiful books with an elaborate or simple flower arrangement…

… but you could even create an entire themed scene like Jen Wood did at this real NYC wedding.

So if you are a bookworm couple or just like really lovely designs, strongly consider incorporating some of Ms. Bickford-Smith’s books into your wedding layout. Best yet you can buy each book for around $14 on Amazon.

The Details in the Fabric.

No wedding decor is complete without gorgeous linens to accentuate your other design elements.

This can be one of the most difficult decisions to make so I whole-heartedly recommend consulting with an expert. As a NYC bride, you have some great options for selecting a linen rental company.

Here are a few very good choices:

Taylor Creative Inc. “offers an exclusive rental collection of modern furniture ideally suited for engagement parties, weddings ceremonies and receptions, bridal luncheons and private events.” They also have a 5-star review on WeddingWire.

Magnolias Linens is a preferred vendor on Season 2 of the hit WE TV show “My Fair Wedding” with David Tutera and specializes in upscale event decor and custom creations. They have sourced and decorated events from Phantom of the Opera to weddings of royal families.

A Perfect Setting Wedding and Events, Inc. not only offers haute couture linen options but are full service wedding planning firm as well. Owner Tamieka is highly praised for her wonderful work throughout the wedding review boards.

While Dress My Chair Party Rentals & Fine Linens is not located in NYC they offer nationwide service to bring their high quality unique linens to brides everywhere. In one WeddingBee review, bride Michelle raved, “They did a fantastic job on our wedding! I was blown away by the work to detail and everything came together and it looked so nice. After months and months of planning, the final product was more amazing than I imagined it to be! The flowers were absolutely stunning. They helped me to select linens and chairs that would complement the floral decor. They were such a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend them.”

Seeing as how we found that amazing venue with the light bulb ceiling, it only seems natural to incorporate light bulbs in other decorating details.

This Oyule Lamp by Sergio Silva can cleverly be recreated using supplies you have on hand. These two tutorials are great guides in creating your own.

Light Bulb Lamp: Another Option

To incorporate our favorite bloom selections, why not make adorable light bulb vases?

Or how about hanging some of these lovelies on the aisle chairs at the ceremony?

And if the raw edges of the bulbs make you nervous, remember you can always smooth them out with some simple hand tools.

Remember what I said about texture. Texture is one of the best ways to affect the mood of your event and has a huge play on the decor. A key element of texture is flowers. The various visual feels of flowers can emit different moods from lush to edgy to ethereal and woodsy.

Therefore you have to consider your overall mood and design when selecting your desired flowers. Of course it’s also best to keep in mind what flowers are in season for your wedding.

The above flowers are an Iris, Wintersweet, Winter Daphne, and Viburnums.

These can be incorporated in various means throughout the decorations. One of my favorite decoration ideas is to create a bookcase display with overflowing Winter Daphne to accent the vibrant colors of The Private Roof Club & Garden at the Gramercy Park Hotel.

Stay tune for more creative ways of incorporating flowers into the aesthetic design.

So my first venue suggestion is obvious from that lovely painting we’ve been working with the last couple weeks…

Could you imagine walking down the sidewalk of Bryant Park between rows of oversized light posts to a ceremony staged in front of Le Carrousel?

To hold an event at Bryant Park you actually have to go through a proposal process that includes details about your event. It is recommended that you allow a lead time of 3 to 6 months for large events and 1 to 2 months for smaller affairs. However, a complete proposal can usually be reviewed within a week and estimated fees will be provided by the Events Department.

You can have your wedding planner arrange everything through the Events Department or contact them personally at events@urbanmgt.com or by phone 917-438-5119. An Event Planning Guide is also provided through the Bryant Park website that provides detailed information on preparing an event proposal.

Now you are probably wondering where the light bulbs come in to play, right?

Well, I’d like to introduce you to The Private Roof Club & Garden at Gramercy Park Hotel.

Doesn’t that just seem so ethereal and inviting? As soon as I saw Dan & Carly’s wedding here, I knew it was the perfect place for an intimate NYC affair.

Everything about this space is stunning, from the aura of the early 20th century hotel roof tops to the artwork of Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst. The Private Roof Club & Garden offers a little something for everyone and can accommodate up to 300 guests.

When you arrange to host your reception at the Gramercy Park Hotel you are provided with a team of skilled event professionals who will cater to your every need. To set up a meeting with the Director of Special Events call 212-201-2168 or email ckornreich@gramercyparkhotel.com.

Next week we will discuss additional decoration ideas that will really make these spaces unique to our event.

Remember how I showed you those three inspiration photos last week that would be the basis for our fictitious New York City wedding I will be designing with you all over the course of the next few weeks. Well this week I want to show you how we start to form that inspiration into a concrete plan that will guide us as this project develops.

In our hypothetical scenario, we will say that my clients desire to have a winter wedding with a warm ambient mood that portrays the city’s personality while maintaining natural elements. These indicators will help in developing a basic idea of what I want to create with them and what I need to look for when planing my proposal for their event.

For me, this is my favorite part. Not only do I get to scour my resources for stunning elements but I then can use my creativity to figure out how these will play into the overall scheme. When I have found my visual foundation I look to put these together in a pictorial collage for my client along with my suggested color palette and a sample of a primary font for printed elements. This is what becomes known as their unique wedding color inspiration board.

When I present their proposal I will explain how each photo applies to their event. In this case, the top two photos set the basis for the ceremony and reception locations while the stunning Leanne Marshall dress provides an attire option for the nontraditional bride. Fresh floral lined bookcases creates an ethereal appeal as they line the walls of the reception corridors and tie into other floral elements such as the chocolate dipped cake.

In my next few posts, I will breakdown each one of these elements in detail to show you how this event can be created in NYC.

One of the most popular questions I hear as an event designer is: “Where do you start in designing a wedding?”

The simplest answer would be “inspiration.” When I begin working with a bride, I like to get to know her and her fiancé as people and find out what makes them spark. Then I like to show them a series of photos that I hope will catch their breath away so to say. If it works, these are the photos that I will use to start the foundation of their wedding: The Mood.

The mood of a wedding is set through a variety of means including color, lighting, and texture. As a NYC bride, you are at a huge advantage of freedom of choice in determining the mood in your wedding. One of the greatest parts of an urban wedding is the varying facets each city offers.

When I started thinking of a lovely NYC wedding I found inspiration in this watercolor painting of Bryant Park.

This photo is a perfect example of a wedding inspiration image because it not only provides a wonderful color scheme but a venue idea and warm texture. Once you find your key inspiration photo like this one, you can look for others that speak to you in their own way.

Next week I will show you how I combine these images into an inspiration color board that will be my guide in designing the aesthetic details for this NYC wedding.
