Picking your wedding photographer can be a daunting task.  Most of you have never had to hire a photographer for anything before and are investing a lot of money in capturing your day.

Please remember, and it’s been said many times before, after you’ve danced your last dance and the flowers have dried, your photographs are what you have left. We know it’s a lot of money you’re spending to capture all the details and the moments you didn’t have the chance to see. I hope that looking back on your pictures sparks the memories and feelings from your wedding day.

Make sure you like the style of the photographers you are looking to hire, I know that should go without saying but what I mean is if there are things you like and don’t see in their portfolio don’t expect to see them in your wedding proofs.

When we show work on out website, blog and sample albums they are what we consider to be our best work and how we typically shoot and design albums.

A large part of most photographers packages are the albums. There’s a large amount of time that goes into perfecting the album pictures and designing it to tell your story. All the companies that I work with offer handmade high quality leather albums. This comes at a premium, but they are beautiful and will last for generations. Not only should you take into consideration the style of the photographers shooting, but also how they process the images and design their albums.

I prefer very modern and clean albums with lots of negative space, I don’t try and fill the negative space with a faded background image because thats not my style.  If this is something you know you like and want in your album, we probably aren’t the best match. Albums are offered in so many varieties of cover options that it shouldn’t affect your decision. In the end, I want everyone to have the album that they’ve always dreamed of and will look back on in years from now and still love, so find what you love!

The day of the wedding you are probably going to spend more time with your photographer than anyone else.  In most cases we are  with you when you’re getting ready to capture moments like your mom zipping up your dress and telling you how beautiful you are. So, the best thing you can do when picking your photographer is to make sure that you are comfortable with your photographer. Once you’ve found a few different photographers who’s style you love you should see who you like best, who you click with and who you’d like to spend your wedding day with.

In the end, as long as your meeting with photographers who’s style you like, being comfortable around your photographer will help you get the best pictures possible.

The Dress Code…

November 29, 2010

Written by Jill Ryder of Shindig Invitations.

I don’t like being told how to dress. I don’t like telling other people how to dress. The colorful pageantry on the streets of New York would seem mundane were everyone to dress in tuxedos and little black dresses. People watching would cease to exist as a valid excuse to pass time.

Regardless, even I understand the need for a dress code on certain occasions. Nobody wants Crazy Uncle Jimmy to show up to the wedding barefoot, sporting a gnarly beard and a pair of jorts.

However, the question of how to address attire on an invitation can become sticky. Dictating a specific dress code other than black tie, (or white tie-if you’re really fancy), can actually confuse guests more. What does “Formal Resort Attire” really mean without a detailed explanation? I promise–you will be fielding calls left and right if you ask people to outfit themselves in “Garden Party Chic”.

Sometimes I have clients who still feel a powerful urge to play fashion police. I’m an artsy girl myself, so I understand the need to have your wedding photos display a pleasing composition. If you prefer to have guests wear only solid colors because someone’s polka-dot frock distracts the eye from your creamy Vera Wang, I get it.

My recommendation… Be specific and keep it simple. Put it on a separate card and make it fun (this is a party, remember). The dress code should sound less like a restriction and more like an opportunity.

Famous New York City Weddings.

November 26, 2010

Being a bride in New York City you already know that weddings here are fabulous but there are a few people who have paved the way for you….

Here, you see Alfred Hitchcock escorting his daughter, Patricia, into St. Patrick’s Cathedral on her wedding day in 1952.

Here, in 1956,  Gloria Vanderbilt poses for a portrait with her new husband Sydney Lumet.

Here, a portrait of Liza Minnelli and David Gest during their wedding in March of 2002. This bride and groom spent 3.5 million dollars on their nuptials-apperently the most expensive celebrity wedding ever. And, yes, that is Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor pictured with Liza and David.

Here, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas cut their gorgeous wedding cake at their reception at The Plaza.

And, of course, this post wouldn’t be complete without the “wedding” of Carrie Bradshaw. Despite the unexpected series of events, Carrie still looks absolutely fabulous and definitely deserves some spotlight!

A New York City Bride.

November 25, 2010

To celebrate the upcoming weekend I leave you with this gorgeous image, from the amazingly talented Christian Oth Studio, that I find incredibly inspiring. I can’t help but smile every time I look at this image and I see how delighted this bride is. I am sure her excitement comes from the anticipation of her wedding day, the fabulous city she has the pleasure of getting married in and of course, the blessing of having found a life long companion. She is a New York City Bride.

Considering eloping to New York City? Lucky for you, the Manhattan Marriage Bureau has recently gotten a fabulous makeover and is now home to two sleek, modern and absolutely fabulous wedding chapels.

Not only has the space been revamped but also the entire process. Instead of going through metal detectors and waiting in long lines for assistance, you can use one of the multiple kiosks available to start the marriage license application. And, instead of using money orders, credit cards are now accepted.

Once you obtain your marriage license (there is a 24 hour waiting period) there are two chapels available for your nuptials. The west chapel is designed in apricot and peach colors and the east chapel is decorated in purple and lavender and there are also abstract paintings near the lectern that compliment each chapel’s decor. Yes, you get all of this beauty for $60 ($35 for the marriage license and $25 for the ceremony).

Once you are pronounced Husband and Wife be sure to stop at this really cool backrop for a photo! Really, it’s the perfect way embrace City Hall.

Oh, and if you forget something (which let’s be honest, you may) There is a shop onsite that sells everything from fresh flowers, disposable cameras, and even fake diamond rings.

Still aren’t convinced that this City Hall beats the Vegas venues? Check out yesterday’s post for 10 Reasons to get Married in NYC!

Introducing… Jill Ryder.

November 23, 2010

Written by Jill Ryder of Shindig Invitations.

Why I do what I do…

I am a fidget. I can’t sit still. The half hour it would take to have my nails manicured is too much time to keep my fingers idle. I like to…have to… make things with my hands.

As a graphic artist with thirteen years of experience, I’ve designed everything from ads to websites to magazine stories. My first job out of college was designing direct mail. Creating items I would dismiss as junk were they to wind up in my mailbox filled me apathy. I never got the satisfaction I get from making invitations by hand. Tying 500 bows all day may seem tedious to some, but for me it’s utter Zen. Making the decision along with a bride to use hemp twine over grosgrain ribbon on her invitation may not be changing anyone’s life, but it is making at least two women very excited.

When I get an invitation in the mail I get pumped. I love parties – especially weddings. I’ll never understand those “Oh great, another wedding this summer. How many Belgian waffle irons am I going to have to buy?” kind of people. These are the very party poopers I’m trying to influence.

Which is why I approach each new invite I create as an opportunity to impress. After all, how excited is anyone going to get about ivory cardstock and black cursive? Weddings are colorful occasions filled with sentiment and thus they deserve to be announced in a way that will generate true emotion. Working closely with couples to create the perfect wedding invitation is all part of the fun. And the idea that people can find a little treasure among their bills and credit card solicitations gives me a great sense of pride. It’s nice to know that what I do professionally reaches others personally.

1. The options for your wedding are endless. Like, really endless. Brides in other cities like to think that it’s possible to plan a wedding exactly as they dreamed as a little girl but unfortunately, due to resources that just isn’t possible for everyone. However, in New York, you really (depending on your budget) can have anything you want. Your wedding can be whimsical, industrial, organic or old hollywood glamour and there is certainly a venue  and vendors available to fit your style and needs.

2.  New York is incredibly romantic. Sure, Paris is known as thee city of love but New York has got to be a close second. Central Park, the skyline, bridges, and old museums – it’s all right out of a movie.

3. Want a City Hall wedding? Well, even a City Hall wedding in New York is fabulous. See for yourself…

4. You can, “say yes to the dress” at Kleinfeld Bridal.

5. You’ll have the most stellar registry East of the Mississippi. I know it isn’t all about the gifts, but how fun to be able to register at the best little boutiques and department stores in the country.

6.You have access to the most gorgeous outdoor event space, Central Park. With a permit (about $25) you can get married anywhere in the park! And, of course, a horse-drawn carriage is a must!

7. The photo opportunities are endless. Waterfront at Battery Park, amongst the lights in Time Square, or atop the Brooklyn Bridge… all perfect backdrops for a photoshoot.

8. One word, food. The variety of food options alone is the perfect reason to get married in NYC. You can find whatever cuisine your palette desires.

9. There are taxis everywhere in New York, meaning you could easily get a fabulous picture like this. Okay, maybe not too easily.

10. Last but not least, your wedding could be featured on The Urban Bride, and really, who doesn’t want that?!

Written by Stephanie Reinish of Stephanie Reinish Photography.

Hey there New York City Brides, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Stephanie, the photographer and owner behind Stephanie Reinish Photography!

So what to tell you about myself. I’m a hopeless romantic, I love love! When I see a couple in love strolling around this amazing city, I smile, they make me happy.  Love is why I got into this business.

I came to New York for college and stayed for a boy (of course). We now live happily ever after in Long Island City (just on the other side of the river) with Baxter, our miniature schnauzer and Mambo our cat.

I’ve been a photographer since my grandparents bought be my first camera 15 years ago. I loved freezing that moment that you could never get back.  Since starting my buisness I see things differently, when I’m visiting a new place I see what amazing photography locations there are and how amazing the light is.

Feel free to ask me anything from the best time and location (an hour before sunset) to take picture to my favorite flair of ice cream (mint chocolate chip!). You can email me at hello@stephaniereinish.com and hopefully you’re question will make it onto the blog.

xoxo,
Stephanie

So what brings a Dallas girl to this amazing wedding network in NYC? One simple truth…

{source}

That’s right wedding peeps… I really do love New York City. Having grown up in New England I spent more time in the city than I can remember and it is truly one of those places that is always inspiring. So what a perfect place for a wedding, right?

And I’m one of those lucky vendors who doesn’t have to remain confined to a specific geographic location. How so?

Well, how about a little intro…

My name is Sebrina Schultz and you can see my picture on the Contributors page. I am the mastermind behind the new event design firm, Mismikado Creations.

I love to provide unique design services like invitation suites and custom chandeliers. And of course I plan to let you all in on my latest projects and events. Every event I take on will be personally handled by me and will be tailored to the personalities and interests of my client. And of course seeing that I am blogging here, I love to travel *wink, wink*

So how did I get into this business?

Well, like most wedding vendors, my love affair with all things wedding began when I started planning my own. I’ll admit that was something I did when I was around 5 (yes I was one of “those” girls) but the amazing world of weddings on the web was opened to me early in ’09. And I couldn’t get enough.

I first started with my wedding blog, Mismikado’s Journey Down the Aisle, which I am delighted to say made BrideTide’s list of Top 100 Wedding Blogs (and Twitters) to Follow in 2010. Then, after encouragement from my then fiance and now hubby, the idea of Mismikado Creations was born. What I love best about owning my own wedding business is that I get to regularly make brides happy while using my graphic design experience and creative expertise.

I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful new community on The Wedding Boutique and I hope we can all share and inspire each other to be the best vendors any bride could find.

I’d love to personally hear from you all and please feel free to send me warm wishes while I’m currently enjoying my honeymoon in Boca Del Rio. My honey says hi too!

You can reach me anytime at sebrina{dot}schultz{at}mismikadocreations.com.

Be back next week!
